Unhappy debut: Acquah loses on Sampdoria bow

It was an unhappy start for Afriyie Acquah in Sampdoria colours after they succumbed to a 1-2 defeat at Chievo Verona in the Black Stars midfielder’s debut game for the Blucerchiati

Cameroon great, Samuel Eto’o’s assist for Muriel to scored for Sampdoria in injury time was scant consolation as Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side suffer for two mistakes in the first half that Chievo took full advantage of.

23 year old Acquah started alongside fellow Ghanaian, 21 year old Alfred Duncan in midfield as Coach Mihajlovic adopted the 4-3-1-2  formation. A third Ghanaian, Isaac Coffie was on the bench all game for Chievo.

Both Ghanaians lasted all game but could not help Sampdoria’s winless run extend to now five games in all competitions, a span that included 2 defeats and 2 draws in 4 Serie A ties.

It also meant that Sampdoria now drop further down the pecking order on the Scudetto chase, Lazio and Genoa both won big to overtake Sampdoria who now fall to 7th on 35 points, two behind Lazio who now sit in 5th and Italy’s last European qualification spot. Genoa have 35.

Acquah, Duncan and Sampdoria will now have to grind out a win in next Saturday’s derby against Genoa with both teams involved in the race for European qualification, neck-in-neck at 35 points apiece.

It was a generally bad day at the office for Ghanaian players in Italy following a 4-1 home loss to Inter Milan by Richmond Boakye Yiadom’s Atalanta in a game that the striker only watched from the bench all game, young Isaac Donkor was also a benchwarmer for Inter Milan.

Black Stars midfielder, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu played all 90 minutes but saw his Udinese suffer a 0-1 home defeat to Lazio, Sulley Muntari was dropped whilst Michael Essien was only a benchwarmer for AC Milan in their 1-1 draw at home to Empoli.

Godfred Donsah however had something to smile about after his thunderbolt from outside the penalty box gave Cagliari the lead in their 1-1 draw at Torino. Follow @thedonplato
