Red eyed blue: Atsu desperate to make Everton impact

Ghana winger Christian Atsu is ready to make the most of the second half of his loan spell at Everton after a successful AFCON tournament.

The 23-year old -on loan from Chelsea- has struggled to make an impact at Everton so far, and is looking to change that.

“I thank God for what he has done for me,’ Atsu said.

‘I always expect good things from Him but I wasn’t expecting to be the best player in the tournament.

‘Any gift that comes from God I appreciate so much and it has given me a lot of confidence and motivated me for the future.

‘I was happy with my performances and I worked very hard. I had a lot of help from my teammates contributing to my good form.’

Ghana reached the final against Ivory Coast but lost out on penalties yet Atsu did walk away from the competition with some silverware of his own.

Atsu was adjudged the Player of the Tournament at the AFCON, and also picked up the Goal of The Tournament award after his wonder strike against Guinea.

‘I wasn’t expecting to win that either but I am very happy people voted for that goal as the best in the competition,’ he added.

‘I will keep pushing and working hard to get more goals for Ghana.

‘Playing against the host nation was really difficult. They came out with the fans behind them and they were confident they would win.

‘I remember in the game, I cut back inside and I saw the keeper take two steps outside the six yard box. So I decided to try and curl the ball in the far post.

‘From there, we were really organised and put in a lot of hard work to keep our lead and we scored the second goal which broke down their spirit.

‘Then in the final, we played really well and created a lot of chances in the game. We held them back, we were defending well and we were organised at the back so they couldn’t hurt us.

‘But in penalties anyone can win. I was very happy while I was with the national team – I was playing and everything went well – but I am sad that we lost in the final.

‘Now, I am in good shape, physically strong and I am really confident I can give my best to Everton. All I want to do is help my Club move forward.’
