SID 2015 โ€“ LET’S CREATE A BETTER INTERNET TOGETHER

Safer Internet Day 2015 is being celebrated globally today: Tuesday 10th February under the theme: ‘Let’s create a better internet together’.

SID is a Childnet UK’s initiative since 2011 and the celebration sees hundreds of organizations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people around the world. J Initiative, a child and family focused organization in Ghana and partners have decided to join the world in observing this day annually as part of the Children and ICT Tools campaign launched last year February to promote the positive use of the internet enabled devices.

The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, caregivers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement agencies, Telcos, policymakers, and the wider stakeholder group, to join together in helping to create a better internet. Ultimately, a better internet is up to us!

For us at J Initiative, we believe that everyone has a role to play in creating a better internet and we need to accept responsibility in delivering on that effectively.

The theme ‘Let’s create a better internet together’ is aimed at driving home the issue of local policing whilst encouraging everyone to embrace technology alright but make the most of the positive opportunities offered online. This theme also enjoins people on the need to be empowered with skills, knowledge and support they require to navigate any online risks they may come across.

Whatever your status in the technological world, there are ways in which we can contribute to safer internet. This is how we can contribute:As – ย

Children and young people you can help to create a better internet by being kind and respectful to others online, by protecting your online reputations as well as your friends and by seeking positive opportunities to create, engage and share online.

Parents and carers can help to create a better internet by maintaining an open dialogue with their children in relation to their online lives, supporting them with their online activity, and seeking out positive opportunities to engage with their children online.

Educators and social care workers you could help to empower children and young people through our outreach programmes by encouraging them to embrace the positive use of the various ICT Tools they have at their disposal. As a teacher too, you could create a better internet by equipping your learners with the digital literacy skills they require for today’s world, and giving them opportunities to use and create positive content online. You can help to respond to the negative by supporting young people if they encounter problems online, and by giving them the resilience, confidence and skills that young people need to navigate the internet safely since the internet cannot be controlled by Ghana.ย

Telcos and other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have a role to play by creating and promoting positive content and services online ie: anti-spam platforms and by empowering users to respond to any issues by providing clear safety advice, a range of easy-to-use safety tools, and quick access to support if things do go wrong.

Decision makers and politicians need to provide the culture in which all of the above can function and thrive, and continue to play a key role as we citizens drive forward our efforts in creating a better internet for young people in Ghana. We cannot afford to do otherwise because safer internet is Up2Us.
