Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association, Nii Komeite Doku says Ghanaian footballers are very ungrateful and have little appreciation of their humble beginnings.
Nii Doku who was speaking on the JOY Sports Link on Saturday, said most of the successful footballers in Ghana all passed through the Colts football system but these players turn their backs on the Colts clubs once they reach the pinnacle of their careers.
“I am telling you on authority and without any sense of apology, Ghanaian players don’t support their colts clubs in any way, they completely forget about these clubs and forget all the opportunities that were given to them. They are selfish people and think only of themselves. We make them big stars from our sweat and when they have made it, they turn their backs on us.”
Nii Doku therefore called on these ex-players, most of who have been blessed and are in a position to financially support Colts’ football to contribute their quota to the development of Colts’ football.
Meanwhile, ex- Ghana captain, C.K Akonnor, who was called via telephone to contribute to the topic, disagreed with the assertion that footballers, both past and present, do not offer any form of support to their colts clubs.
According to Akonnor, he is privy to the contributions of several ex-footballers to Colts’ football.
Colts football was once upon a time adored in Ghana and has been the production line of many of the football greats in this country.
Its appeal however has waned over the years with most parents and experts of the game pushing for the Academy way of training players instead of the Colts system which is still seen as an avenue for only school dropouts.
