Ashgold outplays Kotoko to stay top

Obuasi, Feb. 11, GNA – AshantiGold deepened the woes of defending champions, Asante Kotoko, coasting home to a 2-1 victory over the Porcupine Warriors in a First Capital Plus Premier League regional derby at the Len Clay Stadium, Obuasi, on Wednesday.

The defeat comes barely 72 hours after Kotoko lost 0-1 to archrivals, Hearts of Oak, in another crucial encounter and the expression on the faces of the players and technical team after the match summed up their frustration.

It was the Porcupine Warriors who drew first blood with Latif Ahmed finding the back of the net on 15 minutes in a swift defence-splitting move, after the visitors survived an earlier scare from the Miners.

AshGold, probing for the equaliser marshalled more men in attack and in one of their daring moves upfront in the 40th minute, Bernard Morrison sent in an in-swinger into the goal area, but Kotoko defender, Akwasi Acheampong, desperately handled the ball for a penalty.

Yakubu Mohammed converted the kick as he displaced goalkeeper Ofori Antwi in the process.

The Miners came into the second half attacking from all angles and it took the agility of goalie Antwi to save Kotoko from conceding.

Morrison who was a thorn in the flesh of the Kotoko defence mesmerized them with his nimble foot.

Combining effectively with Yakubu, Morrisin in a brilliant move intercepted a pass and went solo to snatch the winner in the 69th minute to keep Ashgold on top of the log.

Later in the game, Kotoko initiated a brilliant move from the right flank and a hesitant Frank Sarfo Gyamfi was slow in connecting home an Obed Owusu’s cross.
