His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana is urging the national team to give off their very best on the football field when the Black Stars face the Elephants of Ivory Coast in the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night.
The Black Stars seek to end a wait for silverware since 1982 but face the might of an Ivory Coast side rated favourites and also boasting Africa’s best footballer of each of the past four years, Yaya Toure.
But the Ghanaian chief is adamant, urging his side to continue working ahrd as they have throughout this tournament when not even many of their own countrymen gave them a chance.
‘Many were angry from the last World Cup (Brazil 2014) and so when they started this AFCON, we [Ghanaians] did not have faith that they will be able to do anything meaningful,” President Mahama pointed out.
“When we met with Algeria, we scored a goal at the last minute and we did welll (by beating South Africa). We then met with Guinea in the quarter finals and we were able to score 3 goals,’ Mr. Mahama added.
Now the Ghana wants his players to go all out in the grand finale and win the cup for the first time in 33 years, urging Ghanaians to also support the team in prayers.
“Let us ask God for more favour for the Black Stars to do well in this match. We have been seeking to win this cup since 1982 so I am pleading with the Black Stars to do well in this match so we can bring the cup home,” President Mahama urged.
“With determination, discipline, dedication to duty, fortitude and patriotism, you shall emerge victorious’, the President told the team in a goodwill message.
