‘We are a great team’: Asamoah Gyan hails Black Stars victory

Asamoah Gyan is partying tonight, believe it or not even though the national team captain could not make the field to help the Black Stars in Thursday night’s comprehensive semi final victory at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Gyan could not recover from the nasty injury he sustained in Ghana’s quarter final victory over Guinea in the quarter finals and was a notable absentee as the 4-time Africa champions took to the Estadio de Malabo pitch for the second of two last four ties at Africa’s biggest football tournament.

The Black Stars will ran out 3-0 winners over a desperate host nation whose supporters will even find it extremely hard to take but for Asamoah Gyan, all that mattered was the resilient performance put up by his international teammates in the face of adversity.

“First of all I want to thank Ghanaians for this victory, they have done incredible. They have been supporting  us since day one. It wasn’t easy in the beginning but they believed in us and we are happy for them,” Gyan told Supersports at the Estadio de Malabo.

“Then the Black Stars, everybody was focused and determined today and I congratulate the whole team for such a performance,” the skipper said of his side.

“I felt so sad going out of a big game like this, but I knew the Black Stars, everybody can prove themselves. We are a great team and that’s the most important thing because when one player is not available, there are many others willing to step in and do a good job,” Asamoah Gyan added.

On his own health and the injury for which he failed to pass fitness tests to play in the semi final game, Gyan exudes confidence that he will recover in time for Sunday’s final against neighbours, Ivory Coast.

“I am getting better, I am responding to treatment and everything is under control. We don’t know yet if I will be fit for the final but we are hopeful,” Gyan said.

“We are not thinking about Ivory Coast now, we want to go and rest and concentrate on the final. We will find a way to deal with Ivory Coast on Sunday,” the Black Stars captain.
