A 45-year-old man has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for defiling his 11-year-old daughter.
The Police Commissioner for Bauchi, Lawal Shehu, while parading the suspect alongside others at the police headquarters on Thursday, expressed worry over the increasing rate of r*pe cases in the state.
He, however, vowed that all arrested suspects would be charged to court and prosecuted.
“Since January, we have arrested over 10 suspected defilers”, Mr. Shehu said. “Only this week, we recorded over five cases. It is worrisome that among the suspects arrested include a 45-year-old man who defiled his 11 years old daughter and two aged men who are between 45 to 54 years who defiled toddlers of between two and four years.
“Any suspect arrested in connection to r*pe would be charged to court and be prosecuted because r*pe suspects will not be bailable. Even when courts are on strike, the suspects will remain in detention till court resume and will be charge to court”.
The suspect, Abubakar Magaji, a resident of Liman Kagum in Bauchi LGA, said he engaged in the incestuous act because his wife left him.
The father of four also confessed to have defiled his daughter twice.
“I am ashamed of myself because it was temptation that led me to do it”, he said. “I divorced her mother and married another wife but unfortunately my wife also left me a month ago so I needed a woman to be with so that was why I did it”, he confessed.
