Hooliganism: Fan violence rocks AFCON semi final

Ugly scenes erupted at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo during an AFCON semi final between hosts Equatorial Guinea and Ghana as home fans threw missiles at players of the Ghanaian national team.

Home fans incensed by what they perceived as unfair officiating from Gabonese official Eric Arnaud Otogo Castane threw missiles at the Black Stars after the team had taken a 2-0 lead at half time.

With a charged home crowd, expecting a continuation of the Nzalang National’s Cinderella run, every decision made by Otogo was heavily challenged by both fans and players of the home team alike.ย

The end of the first half saw a rain of water bottles, paraphernalia from the southern sector of the stadium which also houses the VIP area as the Black stars were held up on the pitch for about five minutes with the referee.

ย It took reinforcement from specialised riot police brought in from Angola for the tournament before the Black Stars and the referee were ushered in to the dressing room through.

The second half was also held up as fans continued to throw down missiles and it took appeals from the players of the home team led by star player Javier Balboa to calm down fans before the resumption of the second half.

Visibly upset VIP’s could be soon shouting obscenities at the referee in the media centre as they tried to gain access to the dressing room area at halftime.

CAF officials are tight lipped about the incident even though strong sanctions are expected.
