Avram Grant has jumped to the defence of under-fire striker Jordan Ayew and slammed those, describing them as picking on players unnecessarily.
Jordan has become the fall guy of Ghana’s campaign in Equatorial Guinea with stinging and sometimes unflattering commentary of his performances in a Black Stars shirt so far. Even the way he wears his pants has been scrutinised in an atmosphere that has resembled the issues Asamoah Gyan faced at the 2008 Nations Cup in Ghana.
The 22-year old, the last son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele was also heavily criticised following the Black Stars failure at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but Grant is adamant he has been happy with his output in Equatorial Guinea.
The Israeli says the habit of picking on individual players is unhealthy. ‘I think it is impossible and I will not respect it when I come to interviews and the first question is about Jordan Ayew or any other player. It was first about Kwesi Appiah after our first training session, then John Boye who is now very good and about other players,’ Grant said.
He added: ‘The players are doing everything for the country. They are fighting and giving everything to be successful. People can speak about their mistakes. That is not a problem but they need to respect them but not to hang them after every bad game. That is not right. I don’t accept it. Jordan Ayew is a very good player, he has given a lot to the team in the past and I am sure he will continue to do that.’
With captain Asamoah Gyan an injury doubt, Grant could restore Jordan Ayew back into the starting eleven for the semi-final meeting against Equatorial Guinea.
