Government speaking big English while dumsor intensifies – Sammy Awuku

National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku says there is no end in sight for the power crisis in the country because the Mahama-led administration has “no strategic plan to solve the problem.”

He said the country with its current state of power problems is “heading towards a ditch and we are in the dark days.”

His comments were in relation to a press conference held by the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor yesterday where he said government shares the pain and agony of the people and is working to end the crisis by the end of the year.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show, ‘Kokrokoo’, the youth organizer said the President and his administration are only speaking English and have neither the intention nor the strategies to solve the problem.

He said Ghanaians have lost hope and faith in the President after he has failed several times to fulfill the many promises he made to end the power crisis by 2013.

“As a leader”, Mr Awuku said “what you have is word, and your word must be a bond,” but the president has lost that bond with the people, he added.

The President has taken political responsibility for the persistent power cuts and has asked for patience while government goes to work on the problem. He has also refrained from making promises after earlier onces made on the advice of his charges were broken.

Dr Kwabena Donkor has promised to resign if the power crisis does persist beyond 2015 . He said he was confident that the measures being rolled out to ease the power situation will yield positive results by 2015.

But Mr Awuku said the Power Minister’s promise to resign – and if indeed he does, will not solve the problem. Rather the president should be pressurised to execute the work for which he was voted.

He reiterated that the creation of the Power Ministry from the Ministry of Energy in November last year was something that should not have happened all, adding that “it was a shambolic act.”

In Mr Awuku’s view, if government continues to create ministries anytime there is a problem then it might as well create “a ministry for (electricity) transformers” because every now and then, transformers are blowing up resulting in power cuts to whole towns and villages.

He charged Ghanaians to aggressively respond to the situation and register their displeasure. He hinted of a response from the NPP soon.
