Michael Essien decided to see out his contract at AC Milan because clubs interested in him did not match his CV, his agent Fabien Piveteau has claimed.
The 32-year-old was rumoured to be on his way out of the Italian club in January with several clubs queuing for his signature.
But Essien remained with the Rossoneri after Monday’s transfer window was shut and his long-standing representative has claimed clubs looking to sign him fell below expectation for a player of his stature.
“There were many clubs but none were particularly interesting,” said the player’s agent
“Essien has always done well at Milan. One who has played for big teams like Real Madrid and Chelsea, with a track record like his, cannot go to a little club.”
The former Chelsea midfielder was linked with a move to a number of clubs including English trio Queens Park Rangers, West Brom and Middlesbrough as well as Turkish sides Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce.
American Major League side Dallas FC was also forced to deny reports they had offered the Ghanaian international a deal.
