The Inspector General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba, on Wednesday ordered the prosecution of all suspects arrested for political thuggery during the ongoing campaigns at different locations.

The Nigeria Police said the suspects were arrested for perpetrating violence.

The police spokesperson, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu, in a statement said, “The IGP has therefore ordered their immediate prosecution in the court of law no matter their status in the society”.

He said the suspects activities are contrary to section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act.

You may recall that Mr. Abba had on January 24 directed all Zonal Assistant Inspector Generals of Police and Commissioners of Police to crackdown on all political thugs in their zones and commands.

Furthermore, he has advised politicians to play the game by the rules as the police force will not tolerate acts of hooliganism.

IGP Abba also assured Nigerians of their safety while calling for their support for the police force.
