Facebook partners Airtel Ghana to launch Facebook Zero

Airtel Ghana has launched Facebook Zero, a product which will allow all Airtel subscribers in Ghana to browse on Facebook for free on mobile, on January 22, 2015 at the car park of the Accra Mall.

The Facebook Zero product offers free access to Facebook text version and provides a faster mobile browsing experience as well.

Airtel Ghana’s Managing Director, Lucy Quist, in a video message at the event said their partnership with Facebook which brings their internet.org mobile app to Ghana opens up more opportunities for the millions of people to stay connected.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Founder of Facebook, via an update on Airtel Ghana’s Facebook page said the launching of Internet.org in Ghana by Airtel will give people on the Airtel network access to free basic internet services for education, health, jobs and communication.

“Right now only about 12% of people in Ghana are connected to the internet, but connectivity is already improving people’s lives and communities. By connecting everyone, we hope to unlock even more opportunities for people in Ghana”, Zuckerberg added.

The CEO of Facebook explained that Ghana is the fifth country they have connected through internet.org after it was done in Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia.

The night, which saw bigwigs in the online business industry, young men and women, was full of fun and music including the official launch.

As part of the night’s event to thrill fans, an upcoming artiste called Shortboi gave a special rendition for Airtel which kept the refreshed guests entertained.

Airtel subscribers simply need to log on to 0.facebook.com to enjoy the free service on their mobile phones and tablet.

Airtel Ghana gave out packages to the attendants who were taken through the steps in getting access to the free offer.

Aside Facebook, Airtel customers will have free access to: GhanaWeb, Jobberman, Facebook Messenger, Sports News, Tonaton.com, Wikipedia and many more.
