General News of Saturday, 17 January 2015
Government communicator, Samuel George Nettey, has taken pressure group, OccupyGhana to the cleaners describing them as a “bunch of hypocrites”.
He indicated that the group under the guise of a civil society organization is working assiduously for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“OccupyGhana is being bankrolled by the NPP to do the job of the [docile] Minority in Parliament” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.
The pressure group, among other things, has led numerous demonstrations to demand better living standards for Ghanaians.
Apart from being critical on the Mahama-led administration, OccupyGhana is also leading a crusade to fight corruption in the country.
Its latest crusade is an ultimatum to the Auditor General to recover millions of cedis lost through irregularities identified in its reports.
It has threatened a legal action if the AG fails to bring the culprits to book.
This move has been commended by General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, with a call on party members not to hound the group.
His plea seems to have fallen on deaf ears as a party member, Sam George, branded the group as an appendage of the opposition NPP.
The NDC youth activist alleged that leading members of the group like George Andah “who benefited from the benevolence of President John Mahama” has political ambitions.
Sam George indicated Mr. Andah, a convener of the group, is seeking to contest the Ewutu Senya seat as a Parliamentary candidate, but could not name on which party’s ticket.
He challenged leaders of OccupyGhana to come out and launch their political careers ahead of the 2016 general elections.
“The hypocrisy of OccupyGhana is transparent as day and night,” he stressed.
