Two musketeers: Essien, Muntari suffer injuries

AC Milan midfielders Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari have suffered injuries and will be out of action for at least 10 days.

The Ghanaian duo were not part of the Milan team that thumped Sassuolo 2-0 in an Italian Cup match at the San Siro last Tuesday.

Essien was initially expected to feature with La Rossoneri against Sassuolo but the pain from an apparent collision on his toe during the warm up  was too much to overcome while his compatriot Muntari was sidelined from the Coppa clash after he complained about a muscle problem in his left calf on Monday evening.

Essien – who moved to San Siro from Chelsea last year January – is likely to play against Atalanta on Sunday, as the Serie A side assess the full extent of the damage.

‘[Sulley] Muntari will have some medical checks tomorrow, while [Michael] Essien had a problem in his usual toe, but he should be there next Sunday,’ Milan manager Filipo Inzaghi revealed.

The team will also assess Muntari’s injury to determine whether he’s fit for Milan’s game on Sunday and the critical encounter with Lazio on January 24.

Essien has made nine league appearances for Milan while Muntari has appeared twelfth times for Inzaghi’s side, who have endured a tough campaign and currently sit 8th in the table on 26 points.
