Sulley out; Essien in: Muntari dropped from Milan squad to face Sassuolo

Sulley Muntari has been dropped from AC Milan’s squad for this evening’s Coppa Italia round against Sassuolo.

The 30-year-old trained with Filipo Inzahi’s side on Monday but was not included in the 23-man squad to face Rahman Chibsah’s side.

It is believed that Muntari has been axed from the squad following his furious reactions after getting subbed against Torino last Saturday.

The Ghanaian international reacted angrily to Andrea Poli coming on for him by throwing away the warm clothes he had been handed.

The defender was sidelined for a thigh strain just over a week ago and was not expected to be back in time for the tournament’s Last 16.

But the Italian giants believe Muntari’s gesture was aimed more towards himself than his coach Filipo Inzaghi for the change.

Meanwhile, compatriot Michael Essien has been included in the squad while coach Inzaghi has called up the highly-rated 16-year-old Mastour who is still awaiting his debut at senior level for the Rossoneri.

Striker Giampaolo Pazzini will be trusted with leading the line, while Alessio Cerci looks set to make his first start for the club since joining from Atletico Madrid.

Philippe Mexes is suspended, so Cristian Zapata and Alex will start in central defence.

The match against Sassuolo will be played tomorrow evening at 8pm UK time at the Giuseppe Meazza.

Milan squad to face Sassuolo:  Abbiati, Agazzi, Lopez; Abate, Albertazzi, Alex, Bonera, De Sciglio, Rami, Zaccardo, Zapata; Essien, De Jong, Montolivo, Poli, Saponara; Bonaventura, Cerci, El Shaarawy, Menez, Mastour, Niang, Pazzini.
