Minority pushes for probe into the $29m spent on K’si Airport refurbishment

The NPP Minority in Parliament has described as outrageous the $29 million spent on the refurbishment of the Kumasi Airport.

Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, at a press conference on the 2015 Budget Thursday said the figure is most likely bloated.

“On just the resurfacing of 1,800 metres stretch of the runway, 2 million [dollars]? And the procurement of the runway aeronautic lighting system, how much was spent on that? How much was spent on improvement on the parking area? Parliament will probe into this. 29 million dollars for these?”, said Mr Mensah-Bonsu.

President Mahama last month commissioned the Kumasi Airport project which saw the fitting of lighting system on the airport tarmac and the expansion of the runway.

There was also a rehabilitation of months-long defective runway. The refurbishment is meant to facilitate operations at the airport.

The Minority Leader said the expenditure is too high and has called for a probe into the figures put out by government as the cost for the project.

“Parliament as an institution should rise up as a single entity to confront this”, said Mr Kyei Mensah-Bonsu.
