Consolation: Gyan and Asamoah make Africa team of the year


Despite missing out on the final 3-man shortlist for the ultimate Africa footballer of the year award, Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan still had something to smile about after he was named in the continent’s team of the year under review.

Gyan who made the 5-man shortlist for the top prize before dropping out of the race eventually won by Yaya Toure of course, was selected as one of three strikers in a 4-3-3 team which also included injured compatriot, Kwadwo Asamoah.

The Juventus star was named at left back in the CAF XI following his superb displays as right wing back for both the Black Stars at the World Cup and his Italian club of course.

Another Ghanaian to receive an award at the lavishly staged event co-compered by Award winning Ghanaian actress and TV show hostess, Joselyn Dumas, was the country’s first ever President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who got a posthumous CAF Platinum award for his contributions to the development of African football during his lifetime.

On hand to receive the award on behalf of the late Dr. Nkrumah was GFA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi as well as Sports Minister, Hon. Mahama Ayariga.

Ivory Coast and Manchester City star, Yaya Toure re-wrote the records by clinching the ultimate African footballer of the year prize for an unprecedented fourth year in a row beating off the challenge of Nigeria goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama and Gabon striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang.
