“We’ll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event,” owner Ted Turner said when CNN launched in 1980. “We’ll play the National Anthem only one time, on the first of June, and when the end of the world comes, we’ll play ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ before we sign off.”

A Jalopnik writer named Michael Ballaban says he was an intern for Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room in 2009 and located the video of the “Nearer My God To Thee” being played that Turner planned to air.

He says the video was titled: “TURNER DOOMSDAY VIDEO.” CNN started in the midst of the Cold War, and it was a public concern that nuclear war could end the world at any moment.
