Comment: Godfred’s AFCON Diary -Entry 3

Entry 3 January 6 2015
Mongomo stadium is coming alive
When Equatorial Guinea was announced as the replacement for Morocco as host of AFCON 2015 there was worldwide worry over the standard and availability infrastructure for the tiny country. Mongomo, host of group C’s titanic battles was a major concern with it’s tiny stadium and the cabbage patch of a pitch it harboured.I am happy to report that it is no longer a concern. The relaid pitch looks awesome and hopefully will play well during the hectic tournament schedule for Mongomo .The dressing rooms are almost ready and the painters are sprucing up the venue awaiting Ghana,Senegal,Algeria and South Africa.

Gerard Nus is a disciple of Rafa Benitez and Ghana is his first video analyst gig

I have made it my duty to unravel the mystery behind Gerard Nus,the Spanish sidekick of Avram Grant. As they plot Ghana’s AFCON challenge in the serenity of Seville I am also learning a lot of new things about the man who is supposed to be the team’s video analyst. For starters he used to work as a coach at Liverpool. Yes, he was a member of Rafa Benitez’s coaching staff, working with the reserve team. After that particular adventure he spent time with Gus Poyet at Brighton and Hove Albion as head of  Academy coaching before his last role as assistant coach at Australian A -league side Melbourne Heart. If you are with me you would have noticed there is no mention of work as a video analyst anywhere. Well time will tell but when the time comes Maxwell Konadu should remember I told him so.

Schlupp in nervous wait
Leicester City’s utility man is a nervous man and I do not blame him. He is awaiting reports on a scan before a decision is made on his AFCON participation. Results on Tuesday, final squad announced on Wednesday. Talk about cutting it close.

I honestly feel he will start games under Avram Grant and he knows that too which is why Tuesday will be such a big day for him. Not a man to be envied.
