Mashaba thrilled with South Africa’s win

Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba said there was no such thing as a friendly between nations after his side edged a determined Zambia 1-0 in Soweto on Sunday.

Substitute Thuso Phala decided affairs with an 81st minute goal at Orlando Stadium, with both teams using the game to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations, taking place from January 17 to February 8.

Mashaba said: “There has never been a friendly between two nations. It is always a question of pride. You could see in this Zambia team they were very determined to come here and stop our momentum.”

The 64-year-old, however, felt his charges could have scored more goals in the latter stages of the tie.

“Tactically we were superior, we just couldn’t finish and get the goals.”

He added: “The heat was taking its toll, in the last 12 or 13 minutes

12 -13 minutes of the game, you could have seen all the players looking at their legs and muscles.

“All in all thanks to Zambia, we wish them the best of luck. They have not selected their team yet, so you could see they gave their best.

“I say well done to my boys, we scored a late goal, but we could have scored more.”
