The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed that the Black Stars, led by Captain Asamoah Gyan, have rejected the $5,000 bonus package offered them.

The country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports recently proposed a new bonus package for the upcoming 2015 tournament.

According to the new proposal, each player will get a flat match appearance fee of $5,000 per game irrespective of the outcome or which stage of the tournament they get to.

The new proposal was seen as government’s response to the huge public outcry in recent months that the Black Stars take too much in taxpayers’ funds – especially as they do not bring in laurels.

Speaking to Montie 100.1FM, Nyantakyi said the player/management talks had become necessary to communicate the government’s decision to slash the bonus package for the senior national team for the Equatorial Guinea 2015 tournament by 50%.

“The players met us and in our discussions they stated that if this is the amount you want to pay us for each game at the AFCON, then you can keep your money,” Nyantakyi said.

“The players are committed. They are not playing for the Black Stars because of money, but government has to pay them something for serving the nation so we will reach an agreement with them before they leave for Spain,” he added.
