The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye wants sanctions to be unleashed on citizens who deliberately abstain from the National Sanitation exercise.

The National exercise meant to encourage voluntary cleaning of communities by the public has been fraught with apathy.

DCOP Kofi Boakye wants the various assemblies to institute bye-laws to punish people who stay away from the national exercise.

He told Luv News it is de-motivating to find shop owners and traders standing and watching as cleaning goes on in their own surroundings.

Commander One as he is affectionately called wants the exercise scheduled for Saturday, January 3rd, 2015 to be seen as a national event rather than a political deed.

There have been concerns of apathy towards the first two editions of the exercise.

As a result some traditional leaders are rolling out measures to ensure increased participation.

In the Volta Region District of Akatsi, funerals are banned on clean-up days.

Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Isaac Ashai Odamttey, is said to have also introduced a campaign to encourage residents to be involved in the exercise.

Already the Local Government Ministry has constituted a committee to formulate a bill that will make it compulsory for citizens to close their shops, park vehicles and join the three-hour event.
