Hundreds of residents from about five municipalities and districts in the Central Region would have no light for some time due to a fire outbreak on Saturday which gutted a GLICO substation at Winneba junction, destroying a big transformer that supplies electricity to those areas.<\/p>\n
The affected areas are Kasoa, Apam, Agona Swedru, Winneba, Gomoa Dawurampong and Gomoa Dago.<\/p>\n
It took the intervention of three fire stations in the region, namely Winneba, Agona Swedru and Apam District, to put out the fire which started around 7:00pm.<\/p>\n
DAILY GUIDE \u00a0gathered that two fire officers who collapsed during the fire-fight were rushed to the Winneba Government Hospital, where they were admitted and are currently responding to treatment.<\/p>\n
In an interaction with the press, the Efutu Fire Safety Officer, Mr Justice Goka, stated that he had a call at about 7:00pm\u00a0that there was a fire outbreak at the substation, which compelled him and his men to rush to the scene.<\/p>\n
Mr Goka noted that after battling with the fire for some time, they decided to seek assistance from Apam and Agona Swedru fire stations.<\/p>\n
He hinted that the situation would affect water supply at the affected areas as there would be no power for the Ghana Water Company (GWC) to pump water to the areas.<\/p>\n
The Fire Safety Officer noted that the cause of the fire was not yet known as investigations were ongoing.<\/p>\n
Information gathered by\u00a0 DAILY GUIDE \u00a0on Sunday indicated that a delegation from GLICO in Accra was visiting the scene to ascertain the damage and see how best they could put the place in order.<\/p>\n
DAILY GUIDE \u00a0learnt that the situation created an artificial traffic jam on the Agona Swedru-Winneba road, where police personnel at Winneba had to intervene by directing traffic to ensure law and order on the road.<\/p>\n
DAILY GUIDE further gathered that parents who stay around the sub-station, upon seeing the blaze even abandoned their children\u00a0and ran to other areas to seek refuge, as the children ran helter-skelter.<\/p>\n
