Hundreds of people drawn\u00a0from all walks of life, over the\u00a0weekend, joined residents, chiefs\u00a0and people of Cape Coast in the\u00a0Central region to celebrate their\u00a0annual fetu Afehye festival.<\/p>\n
The guests included, President\u00a0John Mahama, Ministers of State,\u00a0Members of Parliament, politicians\u00a0from various political parties and\u00a0other dignitaries.<\/p>\n
The festival, themed ‘Celebrating\u00a0Oguaa Fetu Afahye at 50: Past\u00a0Achievements and the Way Forward’,\u00a0marked the 50th anniversary\u00a0of the inception of the festival.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the colourful festival,\u00a0President John Dramani\u00a0Mahama expressed concern about\u00a0the way the Central Region had\u00a0been rated the fourth poorest region\u00a0in the country despite its numerous\u00a0potential resources.<\/p>\n
He underscored the need for the\u00a0Central Regional Development\u00a0Commission (CEDECOM) to come\u00a0up with a strategic plan to improve<\/p>\n
on the socio-economic conditions of\u00a0people in the region.<\/p>\n
He said Cape Coast was the first\u00a0place to benefit from western education,\u00a0civil service and the judiciary,\u00a0adding that such advantages<\/p>\n
should have reflected in the lives\u00a0and living conditions of the people\u00a0in the region.<\/p>\n
President Mahama observed\u00a0that the region had played momentous\u00a0roles in the advancement of the\u00a0country from the colonial, through<\/p>\n
to the independence and post-independence\u00a0era.

He promised government’s\u00a0commitment to supporting any policy\u00a0that would be initiated by\u00a0CEDECOM to fast track the completion\u00a0of development projects in the\u00a0region to lift it out of poverty.<\/p>\n
Mr Mahama pledged government’s\u00a0commitment to completing\u00a0all the uncompleted projects in the\u00a0area which were initiated by late\u00a0President John Evans Atta Mills. He\u00a0made particular mention of the\u00a0Kotokuraba Market and the Cape\u00a0Coast Sports Stadium in this\u00a0respect.<\/p>\n
The President told the enthusiastic\u00a0crowd that plans were underway\u00a0to demolish and commence\u00a0work on the Kotokuraba Market by\u00a0October 1, 2014 while the Sports\u00a0Stadium would be completed inAugust 2015.<\/p>\n
‘The Komenda Sugar factory\u00a0after its completion would contribute\u00a0significantly in the economic\u00a0fortunes of the people in the\u00a0area,’ he added.<\/p>\n
He charged the Regional Coordinating\u00a0Council and the Cape\u00a0Coast Metropolitan Assembly\u00a0(CCMA) to link up with traders to\u00a0ensure a smooth relocation to avoid\u00a0confusion.<\/p>\n
Mr Mahama attributed the high\u00a0rate of cholera cases to increased\u00a0filth in the nation and called on all\u00a0to support in ensuring the promotion<\/p>\n
of proper sanitation practices in\u00a0the country.
On the Ebola disease, the President\u00a0pledged the government’s\u00a0commitment in taking the necessary\u00a0steps to check the spread of the disease\u00a0in the country, calling on all to\u00a0join the current educational campaign\u00a0on the disease.<\/p>\n
The Paramount Chief of Oguaa\u00a0Traditional Area, Osaberima Kwesi\u00a0Atta II, expressed worry about the\u00a0deteriorating performance of students\u00a0at the basic education level in\u00a0the area, adding that the awful performance\u00a0had deprived students\u00a0access to some of the prestigious\u00a0second cycle schools located in the\u00a0region.<\/p>\n
Osaberimah Atta wondered why\u00a0students fail to focus on their studies\u00a0and rather visit video centres and\u00a0dancing halls at night. He emphasised\u00a0the need for parents to collaborate\u00a0with teachers to improve the performance\u00a0of students.<\/p>\n
In attendance were the Foreign\u00a0Affairs Minister, Hannah Tetteh,\u00a0Education Minister Prof Jane Naana\u00a0Opoku Agyeman, the Deputy Speaker\u00a0of Parliament, Ebo Barton Odro,\u00a0and the Deputy Minister of Trade,\u00a0Kweku Rickets Hagan, among others.<\/p>\n
