Nine police personnel from the Mankranso District Police Command, led by the District Commander, Superintendent Benjamin K Gyasi last Wednesday, April 9, 2014, raided an illegal mining site to apprehend illegal miners operating at Boatengkrom near Kunso in the Ahafo-Ano South District of the Ashanti Region.<\/p>\n
The effort of security agents to arrest the ‘galamsey’ operators to face the law for destroying the vegetation in the area, among others proved futile, as the suspects managed to escape after getting wind of the police presence.<\/p>\n
Briefing DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong>, the District Police Commander said his men, however, succeeded in impounding equipment used by the suspects.<\/p>\n The items included one water pumping machine, six pick axes, 11 shovels, two pairs of wellington boots, four used mobile phones and pieces of water holes.<\/p>\n He said the police launched the operation after receiving information that a group of young people were engaged in illegal mining activities in the Boatengkrom area near Kunso.<\/p>\n Superintendent Gyasi said his outfit would continue to pursue the ‘galamsey’ operators until they were brought to book.<\/p>\n In another development, three young men, who stole a pregnant ewe and attempted to sell it in Kumasi, have been arrested by the police.<\/p>\n They are Rabiu Adams, 33, Kwame Berko, 20, Santa Frank, 17.<\/p>\n They stole the animal at the Dwenewoho community near Mankranso and concealed it in a sack.<\/p>\n The Mankranso police boss told the paper that the suspects were arrested upon a tip-off.<\/p>\n After investigations they were arraigned before the Mankranso District Magistrate Court, which sentenced Rabiu Adams to pay a fine of GH \u00e2\u201a\u00b5240 or in default serve 10 months in prison after admitting the offence.<\/p>\n According to him, Berko was remanded into the prison custody for two weeks while Frank was referred to the Juvenile court owing to his age.<\/p>\n FROM James Quansah, Kumasi
