Vicky Hammah’s Mistakes Has Become Daily Guide’s Chewing Stick

Who will fight for the vulnerable and weak in society, who will speak for the voiceless and the destitute, I remember one of my favourite Hymns back in secondary school days at Bishop Herman College, Kpando, which goes like, whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.

Victoria Hammah, once again allowed her immaturity to take the better part of her by washing her dirty linen in public, when she did what every law abiding citizen will do, by reporting and asking for help from the Police to help take care of her domestic issues.

Unlike lawless agents in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who will decide to take the law into their own hands and unleash gun wielding thugs on their opponents to settle issues, when there is a disagreement, she (Vicky), decided to abide by the laws of the land, but unfortunately that has been her waterloo.

The Daily Guide, has once again found a chewing stick and like a fool they will chew on it, even when the issue has absolutely nothing to do with the young lady, who is already down and suffering.

Since the unfortunate issue of her tape became a subject of public interest and for which reason she was fired from her post as a Deputy Communications Minister, she has never known peace.

A disclaimer is appropriate at this point, before I proceed any further, ordinarily it is not my business, to defend Victoria Hammah, as I do not know her, I have never met her before, neither has she contracted me to do this for her. I am doing this because it could happen to me and you who is reading this epistle, if we do not stand for her, when our time comes, nobody will be dare to speak for us.

As a young man, I admired the courage exhibited by Vicky, when she decided against all odds to contest to represent the people of Ablekuma West in Parliament in the 2012 election. She put up a spirited fight, but lost.

The President, John Dramani Mahama, in furtherance of what the late President, John Evans Atta Mills left, decided to also include the youth, who are the future leaders of the country in his administration. Vicky was among the few who were chosen to serve their nation, she accepted the call amidst all the allegations and the questioning of her capacity and ability to deliver.

Barely had she settled to work, when at a function she disregarded all protocol and threw caution to the wind, when she said publicly that, the speech she was reading was not what she edited.

This act did not sit well with some people, including some Members of Parliament (MPs), people went on air, insulted her and even questioned the judgement of the President, who appointed her.

The Daily Guide had a bite at this; they took her to the cleanest as did by many on social media.

Journalists, who were always foraging for bad news, laid their hands on a tape recording, where she made some innocuous comments in a conversation about the role some people played in the Election Petition at the Supreme Court and why she thought they were untouchable.

She mentioned specifically, Nana Oye Lithur, whose husband, Tony Lithur, was the lawyer of President John Dramani Mahama.

This again did not miss the diabolic lenses of the Daily Guide, they tore the young lady into pieces until the President, who could no longer bear the embarrassment had to sack her.

She resign herself to a quite life, devoid of the unnecessary attention that comes with being a public figure, until she decided to behave in a way I consider childish and a mark of immaturity by bringing her love life into the public domain.

She should know that as a politician, the line between your public and private life is a thin one. In fact you no longer have a private life. Everything you do or say must be measured; else you open yourself up for all manner of insult and ridicule.

She has once again allowed the Daily Guide into her life; sometimes doing the right thing and taking the right course comes with a cost and Vicky is paying a heavy price for it. She could have decided to engage the services of some macho men or thugs to settle her disagreement with her boyfriend, but as a law-abiding and responsible citizen, she did not go that way.

She has one too many lessons, I am still at a loss why she want to learn everything the hard way, we are suppose to make mistakes at certain age and correct ourselves, why she keeps making mistakes that is causing her discomfort and dragging her family name into disrepute is something I cannot fathom.

After the speech fiasco and the tape recording that subsequently led to her dismissal one will have thought that she will have grown by now, but no.

Despite her shortcomings and repeated mistakes, as a society we should not revel in the down fall of one of our own, we are all fallible, we need to support and encourage each other. Flaunting her well endowed body on the front pages and on social media as if it is a crime, is something all well-meaning and forward thinking Ghanaians should condemn in all uncertain term.

What message are we sending out there to women of her kind, who have the interest to serve this country?

By killing her, we are killing the ambition of millions of other ladies out there, who are also interested in politics.

Everybody has a domestic issue or what we call cobwebs in their closet, I am sure when we go to Daily Guide, from the owners to the cleaner in the establishment, we will find far worse domestic and disturbing issues than that of Vicky Hamah.

They are a lot of issues that should engage us as Journalists and media houses, not this petty personal squabble that should be left to the security services to deal with, it was a love affair, gone sour.
