Pollster, Ben Ephson, says Nana Akufo-Addo’s intention to retain Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate if he wins the NPP nomination for elections 2016 is a politically wise decision.
Lead contender in the New Patriotic Party flagbearer race, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo revealed Monday, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be his running mate if given the nod to lead the party in the 2016 presidential elections.
Nana Akufo-Addo made the revelation in the Upper West Region where he started his campaign for the nomination of the opposition NPP.
If Akufo-Addo’s intentions materialises, it would be the third time the pair are attempting to occupy the Flagstaff House, Ghana’s seat of government after losing in 2008 and 2012 general elections.
“There is proof that NPP’s fortunes in the Northern Region improved with Bawumia as running mate”, Ben Ephson said on Joy FM’s Top Story Monday.
He said it will make no sense for Nana Akufo-Addo to choose a different running mate when Dr Bawumia, a renowned economist, has no negative baggage.
“Nana is doing what every normal, good politician would do: take the known factor than the unknown factor”, the Editor of the Daily Dispatch added.
Better late than never
Nana Akufo-Addo also condemned violence that ensued at the party’s headquarters last month, after he was criticised by outspoken party stalwart, Arthur Kennedy for failing to do so.
Some supporters wielding machetes stormed the party’s headquarters in Accra and disrupted a press conference being addressed by party General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and Chairman Paul Afoko.
Nana Akufo-Addo said in Wa that the violence had dented the image of the party, adding any right thinking member of the NPP would not approve of such violence.
Commenting on the issue, Ben Ephson said although Nana Akufo-Addo’s comments came late, “it is better late than never”.
“This statement [on the violence] though belated, shows his [Akufo-Addo] disdain for violence”, said the pollster.
