By taking the first, second and the third positions in last year’s Spelling Bee competition, the international Delhi Public School (DPS) sent out a strong signal that they are succeeding in their core mission of preparing kids for life after school.

The DPS, established in Ghana in 2010, is affiliated to the mother Delhi Public School in India with 174 branches across the world, including the United States.

The school, located at Community 25, Tema in the Greater Accra Region, has a student population of 400 – made up of 14 nationalities – and uses the British educational curriculum for its training.

Principal of the school, David Raj, says DPS, the brainchild of the Chief Executive Officer of B5 Plus – a leading steel supply company in Ghana, Mike Thakwani – exists to provide a child-centered syllabus in a friendly atmosphere. He said beyond the high quality education offered at the school, the students are trained to compete with any child anywhere around the world.

‘Public speaking is one key component of our training modules. Each child gets to face the camera or the crowd and the idea is to prepare students to be able to talk to any president of any country with confidence,’ he added.

The school can boost of the finest tutors with most of them holding master’s degrees in their chosen fields. ‘The degree alone is not enough; and when we recruit teachers we also ensure that they are capable of doing something extra. For instance, I am a trained mathematics teacher but I can also choreograph dance and we also have a swimming pool, lawn tennis, basketball courts as well as football pitch and other sporting activities for our students,’ Mr. Raj added.

With a relatively short stay in Ghana, DPS continues to raise the flag of Ghana high in international competitions, especially the spelling bee and the mathematics competitions. The school topped both last year and this year’s national spelling bee competition and represented Ghana in the international event in the United States.

‘We took the first position, the second and the third positions as well in last year’s event and when our student competed in the international spelling bee contest in Washington, USA, her peers were shocked to learn she came from a school in Ghana,’ Mr. Raj intimated.

The establishment of DPS was the result of the vision of the Chief Executive Officer of B5 Plus, the leading steel supplier in Ghana, Mike Thakwani. He saw this as part and parcel of his social responsibility to the community and to Ghana.

According to him, the Board of DPS, which includes the Member of Parliament for Akyem Abuakwa North, JB Danquah Jnr; was considering a scholarship scheme for needy but brilliant students within the locality the school operates.

‘We are developing foundation courses to prepare students for the NTSE, medical and engineering entrance examinations. GRE and TOEFL in the pipeline,’ he added.
