Photos: Immigration officers maul ‘trotro’ driver

A group of Ghana Immigration Service personnel onboard a Tata bus are said to have physically assaulted a commercial (trotro) driver and some passengers at Amanfrom in the Ga South Municipality, Wednesday.

The officers, who were onboard the bus with registration number GV 5, allegedly beat up the driver of a 207 Mercedes Benz bus also with registration number  GS 4058-09, for  refusing to move his vehicle to grant access to their bus at a bus stop near Kasoa.

The officers were said to be on their way to Accra when the incident occurred.

The presence of a police officer from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service did not even deter the immigration officers from further attacks on the driver and passengers onboard.

The action, which lasted for about 10 minutes resulted in a traffic jam at the toll booth on the Mallam-Kasoa highway.

However, upon seeing a mob rushing to the scene, the immigration officers jumped onto their bus and sped off.

According to Kofi Manu, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, the Immigration bus had parked behind the commercial vehicle to pick some officers while some passengers on the ‘trotro’ bus were also alighting at the same bus stop.

The officers became furious at the commercial bus driver for failing to give their bus access and subsequently pounced on him (trotro driver) ostensibly to teach him a few lessons.

Another female passenger, who said she lost her brand new mobile phone in the brawl, blamed it on the immigration officers.

An old lady told Myjoyonline.com that she was also heckled by the angry officers when she tried to calm them down.
