Woman Arrested For Stealing Children

A 48-YEAR-OLD woman has been busted by the Tema Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service suspected of stealing four children in Accra to Ashaiman.

The culprit, Mariama Abialaba, a food vendor, was said to have lured the children – aged between five and 13 years – from their homes and managed to transport them from Accra to Ashaiman until he was arrested.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jonathan Ametepe Adams-Godoe, the Divisional Police Commander of Ashaiman, told a section of the media that his outfit on September 1, 2014, at about 8:30 am, received information about the woman stealing the children.

According to him, some residents of the Ashaiman Municipality, who suspected the woman of stealing the children, decided to vent their anger on the suspect until the police went to her rescue.

He said preliminary investigation conducted showed two of the victims were biological children of the woman, with the others being children of friends of the suspect.

He said the police had commenced investigations into the matter with initial step of searching for the parents of the two victims who were said to be children of friends of the suspect.

ACP Adams-Godoe stated further that Mariama Abiabala, together with a certain Emmanuel Apreku, a 31-year-old trader, were in police custody assisting with investigations.
