Alan, Addai Nimoh And Ameyaw Must Step Down For Akufo-Addo; Says Appiah Menka

Member of the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Akenten Appiah Menka Menka wants the three candidates running the flagbearership race with Nana Akufo-Addo to step down.

He said that even though the three candidates- former Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten, Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai Nimoh and Asuogyaman MP, Kofi Osei Ameyaw- have made it to the top five, they should take the interest of people in the party into consideration and use their resources to support Nana Akufo-Addo instead.

Speaking Tuesday, on Adom FM’s ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Mr. Appiah Menka said any effort by the three, towards rescinding their decision will bring the party together and promote unity.

The NPP held a Super Delegates Conference on August 31, at 11 centres across the ten regions to select five out of the seven ahead of the crucial October 18 National Delegates Conference to elect a flagbearer.

Out of 740 ballots cast, Nana Akufo-Addo polled 598 votes, representing 80.78%, with his closest contender Alan Kyerematen obtaining a trivial tally of 59 votes representing 7.98 per cent.

Addai Nimoh and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joe Ghartey both obtained 22 votes each which is 2.98per cent of total votes cast, while Osei Ameyaw managed 16 votes (2.17%) to pick up the last ticket for the October 18 national delegates’ conference.

Consequently, two former Ministers; Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku and Stephen Asamoah Boateng who earned the least votes (10 and 13 respectively), dropped out of the race.

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, despite making it to the top five, on Monday announced on Adom FM that he was withdrawing from the race.

Mr. Appiah-Menka said his decision is laudable and that the rest of the candidates must take a cue from him and allow Nana Addo to run the race unopposed.

He said suggesting that Nana Addo be allowed to run the race alone does not mean the party is being built around him.

‘We are not building the party around one person, whoever the party desires to have as a leader should be the one chosen’ adding that if Nana Addo has already won 80 percent of the votes then there is no need for the rest of the candidates to run.

He said the number of times Nana Addo has contested and failed should not be used as a yard stick to measure his future performance.
