Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Northern Regional Minister

Two of six bodies that got drowned on the White Volta in Daboya, following a canoe disaster on Tuesday, have been recovered by residents after hours of thorough search by residents and officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Personnel of the Marine Unit of the Ghana Police Service as at press time yesterday, were on the way to Daboya, the North Gonja District capital, to assist locals in retrieving the other four bodies, despite hours of futile search.

According to the Northern Regional Police PublicvRelations Officer (PRO), ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the two bodies so far recovered had been identified as the wardsvof the Daboya Station Officer, Inspector Alhassan Abdulai Muniru, who himself was a victim.

Members of the Northern Regional Security Committee (REGSEC), led by the Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, visited Daboya on Wednesday to commiserate with relations and to also assure them of his support.

A boat conveying market women and some other passengers, including children who were visiting their parents, on Tuesday capsized in the middle of the river following a storm.

Locals who could swim managed to rescue most of the victims, except the six, prompting the chief fetish priest for the river to perform some rituals with the hope of retrieving the drowned bodies, but to no avail.

District Chief Executive Officer of the North Gonja, Sorku Yehuza, blamed the accident on lack of caution on the part of operators of the canoe, indicating that they were advised not to operate under bad weather.
