Stephen Akwetey Brings Relief To Fishermen In Kewonu

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) Cadre contending for the Greater Accra Regional NDC Chairmanship has led the way for Fishermen at Kewuno in the Ada East District of the Region living in straw houses to gain some respite of modernity. They would soon own fully furnished modern brick and mortar houses as part of a resettlement package for a state-of-the-art beach resort to be constructed in their current place of abode.

The staunch party member who is also the heir apparent to the Gborbu stool of Nungua has through his efforts linked up the Ministry of Tourism and the Trasacco Estate Developers to available land for the Ada modern beach resort to boost tourism in the country.

The Kewuno and the Azinzinya lands, which were acquired by the Ghana Tourist Authority in 1974, was leased to the Trasacco Estates Development Company Limited (TEDC) with the blessing of the Dangmebiawe Clan, original owners, in 2013, to develop a $400 million beach resort.

The Ada Azizanya Luxury Beach Retreat, a project being undertaken by the TEDC and Hilton International Resorts project. The project, expected to be completed in 16 months, would engage 400 local artisans to complete and some 300 permanent workers thereafter, creating huge employment.

Mr Stephen Akwetey who recently led TEDC on a tour of the project site explained further that, “the remote village and its surrounding cottages would also enjoy potable water and electricity for the first time.”

Speaking on the future of the indigenes whose houses and livelihoods would be affected by the construction of the beach resort at the Volta Estuary, Mr Akwetey said the Volta River Authority (VRA) would resettle 105 people on land close to the resort.

He added that the VRA would make sure that affected indigenes would be well compensated and housed in an environment which has all the trappings of modern living.

In addition, a car park with a capacity for 350 vehicles would be built as part of the project and handed over to the Ada East District Assembly to generate revenue for the development of the District.
