The Nungua District Police in Accra has found the body of a nine-year-old school girl believed to have been drowned following Tuesday’s prolonged downpour.

The girl, indentified as Happy Oklah – a class two pupil of Nungua SDA Primary 2 – is reported to have met her untimely death when she got drowned in a gutter in the vicinity.

The deceased and her brother, Joel Torglo, 7, family sources said, were both going to buy gari and beans from about two junctions from their residence when the incident occurred.

Joel narrowly escaped being drowned.
Robert Torglo, 46, father of the deceased, told the DAILY GUIDE in an interview that at about 11: 50 am on Tuesday, he had an urgent call from the house that he was needed at home.

According to him, upon his arrival at home, he was told that Happy and Joel had gone to buy food from the roadside barely 5 minutes before it had started raining.

Visibly distraught Torglo stated that the streets were flooded to the extent that the children got stranded and did not know where to pass.

He said Joel jumped and landed in a gutter and so advised Happy that they should go to the other side of the road.

Mr. Torglo intimated that the girl, upon the advice, also jumped, landed in the gutter and was swept away by the running water.

He disclosed that an attempt by a motorist to rescue the girl was unsuccessful.

Mr. Torglo further averred that in the evening when he returned from work, he continued the search for his daughter but could not find her and lodged a complaint at the Nungua Police Station.

He said he was called by the police that a body had been found in a big gutter near the Nungua District Police Station, which turned out to be that of his daughter.

The body of the child has been sent to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, awaiting autopsy.
