Bastiat Tasks Business Associations

Dr. Tweneboah Senzu
Bastiat Society Ghana, an economic think tank, has charged various business associations to identify opportunities in the wake of the current economic crunch in the country.

The think tank, which made the call in a press statement issued lately in Accra, urged its members to stop blaming government and provide alternative solutions to resolving problems confronting the country.

Dr. Tweneboah Senzu, Managing Director of Bastiat Society, asked business associations to adopt mitigation strategies to protect members.

The approach, he said, would help protect members of the association against unexpected economic shocks, contraction and depression.

‘We, at Bastiat Society, believe that when government policies and strategies are failing, it is the responsibility of management of business associations to see far into the future and identify the opportunities and threat,’ Dr. Senzu said.

Dr. Senzu said, ‘If it was only to be just informed about the nature of the business environment and its impact on individual businesses, I believe the majority of members who are in such associations would have never joined the group in the first instance because information travels faster these days.

He said some associations’ annual membership fees had been pegged at over GH¢1,000 but had failed to address challenges facing businesses.

‘It is common to see in Ghana that most associations focus on blaming government without coming out with possible solutions to problems. As a result, most members have lost confidence because they don’t see value for their money,’ Dr. Senzu said.

He said ‘we want to reduce the number of unproductive small scale enterprises in Ghana.’

In view of that, he said Bastiat Ghana would organise the maiden Entrepreneurship Conference in Accra to facilitate the reduction of unproductive small scale enterprises in the country.

The free lectures for the business community, he said, would be held on September 12 at the British Council Hall on the theme: ‘Reliable alternative solution for business growth and principle wealth making.’

The conference will be replicated in Western region and Ashanti region as well.
