An avalanche of requests are being made to the Ghana Highway Authority(GHA)by pedestrians for the construction of footbridges over the George Walker Bush motorway.
Since the construction of the motorway which is popularly known as the “N1 highway” in 2012, there has been series of pedestrian deaths recorded on the highway.
According to records gathered at the beginning of the year, there has been 200 pedestrian accidents with 71 pedestrian deaths recorded.
Some pedestrians who spoke to Joy News’ Rafik Salam, expressed enormous concerns over the difficulty and fear they encounter whenever they were compelled to cross over to either sides of the road.
Due to the increasing rate of unwarranted pedestrian carnage recorded on the 14kilometer highway from Mallam to Tetteh Kwashie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Boamah, vehemently took the matter up to the floor of parliament , January, this year.
But up to date, promises of constructing footbridges and erection of speed limits made by the then Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemana, is yet to be fulfilled.
However, Deputy Director of GHA in charge of projects and maintenance, Amin Baba Kassim, maintains that a contract has been awarded to a contractor who will re-design the existing footbridges to aid the disabled and afterwards commence with the construction of footbridges.
He also revealed the long-term motive of the GHA to construct interchanges along several highways in the country.
