Kenneth Kwamina Thompson, CEO of Dalex Finance and Leasing Company Limited (DALEX), pledged GH₵ 100,000.00 today as he launched an appeal to private companies in the country to donate CSR funds to an Ebola Education Fund.
The Ebola Education Fund is an initiative of DALEX, Business and Financial Times (BFT) and supported by UNICEF. The objective of the Ebola Education Fund is to raise private sector money to fund a large scale effort to educate the Ghanaian population about the Ebola Virus Disease. The initial target of the Fund is one million Ghanaian Cedis (GH₵ 1,000,000.00).
The potential consequences of the Ebola outbreak on the already weak Ghanaian economy could be stark. The effect of a declaration of medical emergency and the associated quarantine of areas in Ghana or even the whole country could be devastating on the Ghanaian private sector.
The initiators of the Ebola Education Fund are concerned that the current public education effort on the Ebola Disease is too slow and limited in scope.
Kwamina Thompson quoted the Akan proverb “when your neighbour’s beard catches fire, you quickly put water by yours. This is not the time to wait on the government or to moan about the slow reaction of the Ministry of Health.” The DALEX CEO further said “This is time for a privately funded, quick reaction, national program, incorporating radio, TV, information vans, posters, and, SMS messages to educate the public on the Ebola Virus Disease.”
UNICEF is providing communication content and advisory services whiles BFT will lead the media effort and also be the fund managers.
Kwamina also indicated that DALEX had provided 10,000 flyers to be distributed through its sales force of over 1,000 sales executives.
