FDA Intensifies Food Safety Campaigns Amid Cholera Outbreak

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has intensified its public campaigns on the need for maintaining good personal hygiene as well as consumption of safe foods.

The FDA which has come under serious criticism in recent times for what many describe as ‘shirking of responsibilities’ in serving the interest of consumers has expressed its commitment towards resourcing Ghanaian consumers with adequate information on purchasing safe foods in the market through increase awareness creation.

Senior regulatory officer at the Department of Food Safety Management of the authority, Mr. Edward Archer, in an interview on Radio Univers’ health literacy program, Good Health noted that the Food and Drugs Authority has consistently carried out public education and sensitization programs in schools and market places to educate Ghanaians on keeping foods safe for consumption.

Mr. Archer further added that there have been some positive results from their campaigns, however; Ghanaian consumers must show readiness to prioritize their personal hygiene as well as consider the safety of foods they purchase in the wake of the recent Cholera outbreak in the country.

“Our drive now at the FDA is to resource the consumer with enough food safety knowledge so they make informed choices. Consumers must make sure safety is their priority, it lies in their own hands” he said.

Meanwhile, an officer at the Disease Control Unit of the Ghana Health Service, Michael Adjabeng has hinted that Ghana may suffer more cases of Cholera, should the sanitation condition in the country, particularly, the nation’s capital remain the same.

Since July 2014, about 3,000 Cholera cases have been recorded in the Greater Accra region alone.
