Dr. Dzifa Abla Gomashie receiving the cheque
UniBank Ghana Limited has presented a cheque for GH¢15,000 to support the Values For Life (VLF) 2014 non residential Youth Vacation Camp, which opened on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Community Youth Cultural Centre (CYCC), Kawukudi, Accra.
The Head of Corporate Banking, Elsie Danso Kyere and Team Leader (Business Support Services), Christopher Nettey presented the cheque at a colourful ceremony at CYCC to launch the youth camp.
The Head of Corporate Banking said UniBank, as part of its corporate social responsibility, made the donation to help equip Ghanaians, especially children with relevant skills.
Mrs. Elsie Danso Kyere noted that when children are exposed to such programmes, they effectively develop their talents, among others.
The Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye commended VFL for instituting the annual Youth Camp project.
The Minister expressed worry about what he referred to as the continuous neglect of the country’s culture.
The Deputy Minister called for a radical approach to addressing the various issues, adding that stakeholders with credibility such as VFL should play the leading role in this direction through the various interventions.
The Director, Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Christiana Gokel, recalled how CYCC was set up.
The director said that the centre, which is a hub for promoting Ghanaian culture, development of creative and visual arts and performing arts, has over the years produced a number of personalities in the industry, who continue to contribute greatly to national development.
Mrs.Gokel urged parents to allow their children to pursue programmes they love and not consider any course of study as inferior.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MOTCCA), Dr. Dzifa Abla Gomashie, said some people in high positions in government and many other members of society down play the contributions of the creative and performing arts to the national economy.
Dr. Dzifa Gomashie, who is the founder of VFL, a local Non Governmental Organization (NGO), was hopeful the Youth Camp workshop would equip participants with the relevant skills.
The Director of CYCC, Lydia Asala said more than 400 basic school children from the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra regions would take part in the three-week Youth Camp Workshop.
Mrs Asala, who is also the coordinator for the workshop, stated that the resource persons have been contracted to educate the participants on Batik and Bead Making, Basketry, Performing Arts, among others.
The Executive Director of Aid To Artisans (ATA), Bridget Kyerematen Darko, who was the chairperson for the ceremony, paid glowing tribute to VFL for helping to instill values in children.
She said ATA will sponsor five well-behaved participants under its Computer Design Modules.
