DCE Tours Registration Centres

The Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District Chief Executive, has toured registration centres at the district to abreast himself of smooth flow of the limited voter registration exercise. The DCE was later joined by the Northern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the monitoring.

Hon Philip N. Laari said apart from the first day which recorded some difficulties with faulty machines at some centres while some officers also were unable to properly fix the machines, things have since improved.

According to him, the first three days recorded very low turnout in the district especially because most of the people have travelled to Kumasi and other bigger towns and cities down south for greener pastures.

The DCE however, revealed that there has been improvement as the exercise progressed. Though the exercise will continue until the 13th of August, the DCE was happy about the peaceful manner it has progressed so far adding that they have since not registered any security issue or violence and was confident it will end today without any problem.

Hon Laari noted that, the limited exercise is targeted at people who could not register during the last exercise as well as people who just turned 18 years after the 2012 elections.

The Electoral Commission had to change the date for the special limited voter registration exercise to August 4, to August 13, 2014, following the Supreme Court ruling barring the Commission from accepting National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards as a form of identification for the exercise.

The Northern Regional NDC Chairman Chief Sofo Azoka, explained that, the ruling National Democratic Congress –NDC has interest in the manner at which the EC does its work. As the regional chairman it is a responsibility as a leader to go round the centers across my area to see to my party agents and the EC officials. I find the ongoing registration as one of the well organized exercise of the EC.

Chief Sofo Azoka thanked the EC for doing their work well especially with regards to the machines. Amongst other people who followed Chief Sofo Azoka were the NDC party executives of the two constituencies, thus Bunkpurugu and Yunyoo constituency respectively.

Earlier in the first days of registration Hon Joseph Naabu Member of Parliament for the Yunyoo constituency had gone round some of the centres dashing monies to EC and party agents. According to the MP , the exercise has been very encouraging as applicants are willing to take part.
