The Anti Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service in conjunction with the Eastern Regional Police Command, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and Challenging Height, a non-governmental organisation, have organised a successful operation in Bunso to rescue some trafficked children.

The children, numbering over 30, were onboard four buses unaccompanied, with the youngest being seven years old. They were picked from Ningo, Pampram and Ada in the Greater Accra Region and were being trafficked to Yeji, a fishing community in the Brong-Ahafo which has gained notoriety in human trafficking and child labour.

Drivers of the vehicles, whose registration numbers were GW 9455 X, ES 7734-12, GR 4253 D and GW 2664 T, claimed they did not know anything about the children even though they were onboard their vehicles when their buses were intercepted by the police at Bunso on Sunday.

No passenger also claimed any of the children as relative(s).

Deputy Regional Commander, ACP James Azumah Abass-Abaah, who briefed DAILY GUIDE after the operation, said the drivers had been asked to report to the Head of Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Superintendent Mrs. Patience Quaye, at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Police Headquarters, Accra or the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters to assist in investigation.

He gave the names of some of the children as Favour Korley, 17; Pascal Agbugleu, 7; Osmond Agbagbley, 7; Mawuli Agbugbley, 12; Tei Uyrai, 13; Mawulawoe Ayewuri, 8; Newton Agawuri, 10; Solomon Anasa, 17; Patience Otumfuo, 13; Bernice Anyawuri, 12; Abigail Agregyam, 10 and Doris Ametore, 12.

The police chief also pleaded with parents, guardians or relatives who might know the children to call at the above Police Stations to help reunite the trafficked children with their families by assisting police in the screening process.
