The Priest of the Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra, Father Campbell, has taken exception to Ghanaians stigmatising persons living with leprosy across the country.
According to the Christian cleric, stigmatising people living the condition demoralises them and that could have a grave psychological impact on how they view themselves and the world around them.
Father Campbell was speaking on last Friday in Accra when Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Emmanuel Andrews Samini, popularly known as Samini, visited his parish to donate 25 solar-powered lanterns to the Weija Leprosarium.
The donation was part of the Samini Foundation Light A Million Lives Project which seeks to supply one million free solar lights to underprivileged individuals across the country.
According to Father Campbell, ‘We should not marginalise people living with the disease. The Bible says we should do unto others as we want them to do unto us. How will you feel if you were in their shoes and people neglect you?’
He continued…, ‘We need to help them because it is not their faults that they are lepers. Don’t stigmatise them.’
The cleric disclosed that the Weija Leprosarium which was established about 20 years ago and supported by Lepers Aid, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has 30 inmates.
He commended Samini for the donation and urged corporate bodies and other individuals to support the needy in the society.
