KMA declares Saturday tree planting days


The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has taken its city greening initiative to a different level by  declaring Saturday 9 ,  August, 2014  a special tree planting day.

 
The assembly expects a number of volunteers from the business community and the general public to join hands in planting 5,000 trees this weekend along selected major roads in Kumasi.

 
A number of major roads earmarked include;  Accra – Asafo – Bebre Road,  Anloga Junction-Airport Roundabout – Suame Roundabout,  Anloga Junction    – Asokwa Interchange,  Asafo Ahmadiya Roundabout – Coca Cola road,  Bekwai Roundabout – Opoku Ware    – Santasi – Anyinam road.

 
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly recently launched the Kumasi Urban Forestry Project dubbed “Me and My Tree Competition ” aimed at planting over one million trees within the metropolis by the year 2017.

 
The project seeks to return Kumasi to its ‘Garden city status’ by greening its streets and improving the environment.

 
Since it’s launch, the KMA and it’s major project partners, the Ghana Education Service , Parks and Gardens, Natural Research Institute, KNUST, Forestry Research Institute of Ghana under the Crop Research Institute  have supervised the planting of about 5000 trees so far.

 
Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu tells Luv News the project has been largely financed by voluntary donations from institutions, businesses and individuals who believe in the dream of sanitizing the city and restoring its green image.

 
“Financial Institutions, Traditional Authorities, Religious Bodies, Fun Clubs, the Media, Market Women Associations, Youth Groups and the general public are expected to grab implements on Saturday to plant and nurture 5000 more trees”, He said.

 
Seedlings  have been made available at the various Sub-Metro Councils for collection and planting.
