Johnson Kombian, the convicted jail breaker and suspected armed robber who was expected to open his defence yesterday at an Accra Fast Track High Court for allegedly killing two police officers and wounding another, could not do so.

Mr. George Assamaney, Kombian’s counsel, told the court just as the suspect was to be called to open his defence, that his client had informed him that he (client) was unwell.

The trial judge, Justice Habib Logoh, had to adjourn the case to August 12, 2014.

A pathologist of 35 years’ working experience, Dr. Alina Rodriguez Grilam – staff of the Police Hospital – on Thursday, told the court that the death of the two police officers – Corporals Owusu Frimpong and Prince Agyare – believed to have been killed by Kombian and an alleged accomplice, was a result of ‘multiple traumatic injuries and loss of blood as a result of gunshots.’

Speaking through a Spanish interpreter, the pathologist said on October 25, 2010, the autopsy was performed on two male bodies whom she identified as those of Cpls Agyare, 25 years old and Frimpong, 24 years.

The doctor said it was conducted in the presence of male relatives of the deceased police officers after which a verbal report was given, followed by a written one later.

She consequently tendered copies of the autopsy reports to the court in evidence.

Under cross-examination by Mr. George Assmaney, the doctor said she only dealt with the medical aspect of the case and not the investigative side of it.

She also said her report about the issue of Kombian allegedly killing the police officers was based on police investigations and so she would not be in a position to know if investigations later turned out to be something else.

She said she would not be in a position to know whether or not it was the suspect who killed the accused person.

Kombian is expected to open his defence after the state had informed the court that it had closed its case.
