AMA promises a clean Accra in 3 days

Spokesperson for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Numo Blafo III, in an incredible move, has promised that heaps of rubbish that have riddled the city will be totally cleared within three days.

His promise comes in the wake of an intervention by Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur this week to rid Accra and its environs of piled up garbage.

The Vice President was present at a cleanup exercise undertaken by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly that started at Agbloshie and was scheduled to take place at Abossey-Okai and Kokomlemle dump sites at later dates.

The reasons for the delays in clearing the heaps of rubbish were attributed to non-availability of landfill sites, equipment and personnel.

But the AMA Spokesman said in Newsnight Wednesday, now “we don’t have any excuse for leaving the heaps of refuse in the Metropolis”.

The AMA says it has created two more landfill sites at close proximity to dumpsites noted for accumulating heaps of rubbish.

“We now have the equipment, we have the trucks to do the job…we ourselves at the AMA have given a mandate of three days to clear the refuse in the metropolis”, he assured.

The recent outbreak of cholera in parts of the city has been linked to the deteriorating waste management and sanitation situation in the capital.

In a major initiative to stem the recent cholera outbreak, President Mahama has instructed the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Julius Debrah, to immediately embark on a major cleanup campaign, a move that was also supported by the Vice President. Story by Ghana | Myjoyonline.com | George Nyavor | [email protected]
