The Central regional Branch of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, as part of efforts to ensure zero tolerance for violence against women and girls, has organized a capacity building workshop for security agents on sexual and gender-based violence at Cape Coast.
The workshop, the second of its kind, was organized by DOVVSU in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund.
Addressing the participants, a Programme Analyst, Reproductive Health and Humanitarian Assistance, Bridget Asiamah, called on all to embrace social norms and attitudes that condone discrimination and violence against women and girls.
She underscored the need for the country to strengthen its legal systems to combat all forms of violence.
The Programme Analyst noted that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) would not be attained unless greater attention and resources are devoted to women’s empowerment, gender equality and reduction in violence against women and girls.
Madam Asiamah indicated that stakeholders, who are responsible for the protection of refugees and their host communities, including police officers, lawyers, immigration officials, health personnel and social workers must be sensitized.
She stressed the need to develop strategies to promote women’s empowerment, gender equality and reproductive health and rights.
The Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ransford Moses Ninson, commended the UNFPA for its support in tackling violence in the area.
He gave the assurance that the knowledge gained would be used efficiently to achieve the set goals.
