Court fines fake currency dealer


An Accra Circuit court on Friday fined Yussif Iziya, 40 years, for possession of forged notes.

Yussif, who pleaded not guilty, was fined 200 penalty units (GH₵ 2,400) or in default serve five years imprisonment.

Police Chief Inspector Joyce Kuwornu told the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that the police acted upon intelligence gathered that the convict was dealing in narcotic drugs as well fake Ghana currency notes.

She said on December 3, 2013, personnel from the Narcotics Unit proceeded to Alajo and arrested Yussif in his room.

She said a thorough search conducted in his room revealed an amount of GH₵ 97,300, all in 50- cedi denomination suspected to be fake notes.

The prosecution said during interrogation, the convict stated that the said fake currency was given to him for safe keeping by one Adams.
