Bloody Clash In Sunyani

When the workers attempted to move en bloc towards the direction of RCC, the Deputy Regional Police Commander, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong allegedly ordered his men to fire tear gas and warning shots to dispel them.

This angered some of the protesters who began throwing stones at the police. At this point, the police personnel were ordered to beat and arrest anybody in red bands, where innocent citizens and demonstrators were assaulted and some hit by the robber bullets.

A number of the demonstrators and by-standers suffered various degrees of injuries in the process in what residents described as an unprovoked attack by about 250 armed police personnel who had been detailed to provide security for the agitating workers.

Ameyaw Joseph Kwasi, Bofa Christian, Dwamena Stephen, Assemblyman for Penkwase and one Paul were among those who were assaulted, arrested and later detained at the Sunyani District Police Station.

Ameyaw, who had one of his teeth broken as a result of the beatings, has vowed to employ traditional means to seek justice after the police refused to give him medical forms to go to the hospital on the basis that he could not identify the personnel who assaulted him.

At the time of filing this report, about four residents who were hit by the robber bullets, had been admitted at hospital and receiving treatment.

Sixty-two-year-old Anthony Manu, who was not part of the demonstration, was also hit by a bullet at his back. Berekum-based journalist, Nana Poku Piesie, alias Awana, had his nose partly damaged after a bullet hit his nostrils.

Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joseph Ankamah, addressed the workers.

Some of the police personnel attempted on two occasions to harass the DAILY GUIDE reporter who was capturing the happenings on camera. One officer violently held the reporter and tried seizing the camera, but when he produced his ID card, the officer left him but warned him not to take any shots.
